In regards to smoking and not putting on weight, well thats an urban legend and is not true at all. Nicotine is a stimulant as well as a relaxant. It slows down blood, makes the body colder as a result and does have a minor effect which decreases appetite. However, the body soon moves back into a routine where the decreased appetite effect is negated and the person eats a normal diet. Stopping smoking increases the appetite in the same way leading to a weight boom but again after a lengthy period of non smoking the appetite restores to normal levels. Therefore there is no benefit for someone dieting to suddenly start smoking as its a temporary effect with a rather more dubious long term effect being increased chance of lung cancer.
